Google Home vs Amazon Echo: Google Assistant Takes on Alexa
Google finally launched its Amazon Repeat competitor, christened Google Home. The smart speaker comes in a much smaller form factor than the Repeat, and promises a lot more. What with Google Assistant packed in (which we have seen is much improve than Siri), I definitely have high hopes from Google Dwelling. So, if y'all're wondering what these two products are capable of, look no farther. In this commodity, I will pitch the Google Dwelling house vs Amazon Echo, and see how Google Assistant fares against Alexa:
Basic Requests and Commands
We'll start off with some really basic, and mutual commands. Stuff that I would usually practice everyday, on my Google Home, or Echo. This comprises of things like checking the atmospheric condition, basic conversions, taking notes, etc.
Note :We're using these devices in Bharat. While Google Home easily accepts locations based in Bharat, and works with them, the Echo does non. And then, your mileage may vary.
i. What's the weather similar
This first command is a prime example of the difference it makes, using an Echo in a country information technology is not yet supported in.
While Google Home tin can easily inform me of the current weather weather in New Delhi, the Amazon Repeat doesn't like to work similar that. It merely really accepts US based addresses, and for people in the U.s.a., this command will work perfectly.
Nonetheless, if you want to bank check the weather in a location outside of the US, you can do that pretty easily, then let's effort that next.
2. What's the atmospheric condition like in New Delhi
This time around, I'll phrase the weather request differently.
Google Domicile worked, obviously, but this time effectually, the Echo was as well able to get me the electric current conditions atmospheric condition for my city. Then, if you're using an Echo outside the US, in a land non however supported past Amazon Echo, you'll have to be careful to phrase your weather related queries properly.
three. How many inches in a metre
Let's bank check whether our two smart speakers can perform elementary conversions for united states.
Well, I would've been really disappointed ifthisdidn't work. It's not a surprise, really, that both the Google Abode, and the Amazon Echo tin can handle simple conversions.
four. Take a notation
Non many people utilise their smart speakers to accept notes, only I call up it's a perfectly good way of quickly writing something down. And then, let'southward ask the Google Home, and the Amazon Echo to take a note.
Google Home apparently can't have notes, yet. Not even when Google has a Notation taking app (Google Keep), that syncs over the cloud, and is even installed on my phone. What's even more surprising, is that Google Home seems to be using Google Keep to manage shopping lists, anyway.
The Amazon Echo, on the other hand, asked me for what the note was, and added information technology to my to-practise list. Not exactly perfect, simply at to the lowest degree Amazon doesn't have a annotation taking service, so I will actually commend Amazon for how they've handled this.
5. Toss a coin/Gyre a die
This is not really something I ask either of my smart speakers to practice, but it'southward a very bones matter thateven Sirican do, so I really wanted to check.
Conspicuously, both the Google Domicile, and the Amazon Repeat are perfectly capable of tossing coins, and rolling dice. And then far so practiced. Both of our assistants were good enough, when it came to basic commands (except for that 1 niggling thing that Google Domicile did with taking notes). Permit'south move on.
Music and Radio
One affair that I immediately noticed with both the Google Dwelling house, and the Amazon Repeat, was that they sound great. Which means that they'll make for great stand up-in speakers at a pocket-sized house-political party. Or yous know, just to continue you lot entertained with some music when you need information technology.
1. Play Starboy
On the Echo, this command would unremarkably look for Starboy in "Amazon Prime Music". notwithstanding, I use Spotify, and both the Google Dwelling, and the Amazon Echo let me select the default media player that I want to use, which is why I take them set to employ Spotify, and I can simply say things like "Play Hymn for the Weekend". The trouble is that even when I have the default prepare to Spotify, Amazon doesn't look for it, and is unable to play it.
ii. Play Starboy on Spotify
This worked for the Amazon Echo. Google Home was manifestly still able to play the right song, off Spotify. By the way, Google Abode volition let you choose a default betwixt Google Play Music (manifestly),YouTube Red, Spotify, and Pandora. More integrations may be coming, but these are the services you lot tin set as default, for now.
3. Play ESPN radio
Both the Amazon Echo, and the Google Home, are perfectly capable of streaming radio, using TuneIn. So allow's check that out, next.
Both the Amazon Echo, and the Google Abode can play radio from TuneIn, which is great. Depending on your net connexion, you may discover occasional buffering, but that's to be said of whatever net streaming service.
Context and Capability
Like I said before, Google Banana's AI has proven itself fourth dimension and again, to be one of (if non the) best AI, and that calls for a context, and adequacy test on both the Google Home, and the Amazon Echo.
1. Who is Roger Federer
This was quite a simple query, and both the Amazon Echo, and the Google Habitation were able to handle it perfectly well. So, let's move on to some queries that use this context every bit their base of operations.
2. Who is he married to
Amazon Echo merely doesn't sympathise context. Yet, Google Dwelling does, and provides the perfect respond to the query. Nonetheless, I actually desire to take this i step farther.
3. When did they get married
Once again, Google Abode was able to give the correct issue. I didn't expect Amazon to provide any useful outcome, and information technology didn't. No surprises there.
four. Contextual Math
Since the Echo can't continue track of context, information technology does a weird thing some times. Cheque it out:
- 5 multiplied by v
- add 5
Encounter what happened there? Since Google Habitation can sympathize context, it gave me the right reply (30, in this case). However, the Echo took the "add 5" command to mean that I wanted it to add five to my shopping list. That is incredibly weird, because why would someone practise that? Anyhow, moving back on to the capabilities of these smart speakers
5. Runway my packet
I wanted to try this one out considering Google Now was able to runway packages (or at least prove notifications for them), and Google Assistant, existence superior, should be able to practise the aforementioned.
That was… disappointing. I really hoped Google Home will be able to give me at least some details.Amazon Repeat, can at to the lowest degree track packages from Amazon, which is more than what I had hoped for.
6. Interpret how-do-you-do, how are you to Spanish
This was quite an easy command, and while both the devices were able to practice it, I prefer how Google Dwelling does it. The Echo simply writes the translation in the Alexa app, but Google Home speaks it out, which is much more useful. If I have to have my mobile out to run across the translation, why wouldn't I simply use my mobile to interpret it, anyway?
Fun and Games
Every bit much equally I tell people that I utilise the Echo, and Dwelling to be productive, there are times when you just want to sit back, and accept some fun. Both these speakers come with games, and other fun stuff, built right in. Allow'southward check it out, now:
one. Alexa what practice you lot think of Google Domicile
2. Hey Google what do you think of Amazon Echo
Both the assistants like playing nice, which is corking. I wouldn't want AI'south starting to dislike each other; that's never good news for us.
three. I want to play a game
Similar I said, both these devices come with games congenital correct in, however, while the Google Home has three games to cull from, the Repeat only comes with one. To exist fair, you can enable a lot more games in the Repeat past calculation Skills.
4. I'thousand feeling lucky
This one is great. Y'all should definitely try it out on the Google Dwelling, or the Google Assistant in your phone.
As it turns out, the Google Assistant knows how to put on a smashing show. You lot can try it on the Amazon Repeat, as well, but information technology doesn't do anything with this "very Google" easter egg.
v. Say the alphabet backwards
Again, Google Home is the only ane that tin can practise this. It doesn't really thing to the over-all capability of the device, but it's definitely a swell easter egg, and something fun to show off to your friends.
IFTTT Integration
Both Google Habitation, and the Repeat back up IFTTT integration. Yet, the Echo only supports information technology in the US and UK. Google Home, on the other hand, works anywhere. Creating IFTTT recipes is easy, and I created one that welcomes me to work, and sends a chat message to my team, informing them that I've logged in.
I'yard Hither
I created the same recipe for both the Google Home, and the Amazon Echo, but since the Echo just works in the US, and the UK, it didn't piece of work (obviously). The Google Home, on the other hand, welcomed me, and sent a message to my team telling them I'one thousand logged in, which is perfect.

Google Habitation vs Amazon Echo: Two Bully Smart Speakers
It is quite obvious that both these devices are pretty great. Personally, I would give the edge to Google Domicile. The one complaint I have with Google Home (no to-do list support), is one that can be easily fixed with an IFTTT recipe between Google Domicile, and Todoist. Speaker-quality wise, they are both awesome, again. Evidently, they won't supervene upon your dedicated audio organisation, but they're pretty great, anyway. I adopt the deeper bass of the Google Dwelling house, but a lot of people find the Echo's clearer, and louder treble way better than the Dwelling's. And so, yeah, it'due south personal preference, in the end.
Allow me know your thoughts on the Google Home, and Amazon Echo. Too, if yous know of some fun commands, and easter eggs that you want to share, feel free to do then in the comments section below.
